For me there is something purely magical about the beat of a drum. The rhythm, the sound, the vibration it carries. It has been used in many traditions down through the ages forming an integral part of culture, healing and dance.
The shamanic drum is a means and a reminder to connect in with the beat of our heart and Mother Earth. The rhythmic beat alters our mind allowing us to transcend earthly limitations and connect to the infinite that is Great Spirit/God/Divine. The drum humbly reminds us that we are not separate from Nature and have much to learn from it. It also allows us to remember our own true nature by clearing what no longer serves us.
When I drum in group meditations it takes on a life of its own. The drum plays me. That means I must surrender and let go of my need to control the drumming, my body must relax. If I don’t my hand and arms will ache. It’s not always easy. That’s why drumming for me is so powerful. It reminds me of my humanity, my errors, shows me my ego and gently reminds me that the purpose of life is to learn and grow from the present moment.
When I surrender to Great Spirit the drum sings and dances it’s way into the hearts, minds and bodies of those in attendance. That’s power of sound. The power of surrender. The power of presence. It’s quite beautiful really.
There’s are part in us all I believe that remembers our true nature and drumming is one method of bringing this to the fore. It helps take you out of your mind and into your heart. To me it is sacred. Anything can be made sacred. It only requires concentration and attention. Placing yourself in an environment where you can concentrate on what is going on within (minus the mental chitter chatter) is food for your soul and where your true nature may flourish.
I have witnessed many miracles both during and after drumming meditations with people. Physical pain disappearing, anxiety disappearing, beliefs being transformed for the better, people finding peace for themselves, confidence cultivated. That’s how powerful drumming can be. The power of people. The power of the Infinite working through the shamanic drum. It is not me that heals but the openness of the individual to receive the healing. My role is to facilitate that openness to let go of what is no longer needed and welcome what is.
